The BIG Little Science Centre (BLSC) is a not-for profit that has been operating in Kamloops since October 2002. The BLSC was registered as a not-for-profit organization in 2003. The Science Education Programs operated by the BLSC seek to engage and inspire our community’s children, their families and our teachers to explore and experience science in an entertaining and stimulating environment. It will nurture a life-long appreciation for and interest in science within its audience.
The Science Education Programs at the BLSC play a vital role in ensuring that quality science education is available to all members of our community. Science and science education are vital parts of our society and affect its standard of living and the attainment of such a standard. Their importance cannot be overstressed, as they affect and enhance all aspects of our society. An understanding of, and familiarity with, the benefits of science is a community necessity. The BIG Little Science Centre was founded to provide a positive, hands-on science experience. The purpose of its displays and presentations is to instill in visitors a sense of the fun, wonder and excitement of science and some of its interesting applications.
The BLSC is unique and highly interactive. Research shows that science centres that offer interactive exhibits are able to increase the depth and range of knowledge in students visiting these centres. This interactive nature coupled with the provision of an educational resource for science teachers has been a priority of the BLSC since its inception. The Centre also acts as an educational and human resource for college students, university students, and professors in the near geographical area.
It is our stated aim is to maintain this hands-on approach to science education, and we are gratified to have had many letters from visitors telling us how the BLSC makes science interesting to students, thereby allowing us to measure the impact we are having on the visitors we serve.
